Delicate, pale...Rioja?

Pale, light and delicate, with an elegant freshness and fruity flavour… Ramón Bilbao Rosé is not a traditional Rioja - it is today’s Rioja.

The Alto Najerilla region, the coldest vine growing area in Rioja, has long been producing pale, dry style rosés - just like those from Provence that are gaining so much popularity around the world. At high altitudes between 550-700m above sea level, the terroir here is poor and shallow with clay chalk soils. Temperatures vary between 20-24ºC during the day and 3º-8ºC at night in the last stage of the ripening period - all of which is perfect for producing grapes for ‘Clarete’ rosé wines.

We’ve been drinking these wines at home and in restaurants for decades - and now you can too. Our Ramón Bilbao Rosé 2013 is made from 100% Garnacha grapes using the saignée method and is a completely different shade of pink than the deeply coloured Spanish rosés that are so often found outside our country.

Pale salmon pink in colour, our wine has aromas of fresh red berries on the nose, and flavours of strawberries and light citrus fruits on the palate with a zesty acidity that is just perfect for summer drinking.

Wine harvest promising despite challenging season SOUTH AFRICAN WINE: HARVEST REPORT 2014*

Despite a challenging season characterised by high, and in some instances untimely rainfall, the South African wine industry expects an average sized, good quality wine grape harvest, with exceptional harvests in especially the coastal regions. This according to VinPro, the representative organisation for close to 3 600 South African wine producers and cellars. The harvest commenced one to two weeks later than normal, due to late, cold winter conditions and a cooler spring. High rainfall mid-November and in January led to producers having to irrigate much less, but applying stricter disease control measures at higher input costs to limit losses. Above average yields of exceptional quality were specifically obtained in the coastal regions, while irrigated areas also achieved good crops despite loss due to rot. The effect of a greater drive from producers to increase production and enhance profitability is evident from increased crop levels. However, the Orange River experienced the greatest frost damage in years, which had a substantial effect on the harvest. The total harvest will be approximately 2.6% smaller than the record harvest in 2013 and consumers can look forward to high quality wines from the 2014 harvest year. Crop size** – The 2014 wine grape crop is expected to reach 1 459 636 tons according to the latest estimate (30 April) of the SA Wine Industry Information and Systems (Sawis). The 2014 wine harvest – including juice and concentrate for non-alcoholic purposes, wine for brandy and distilling wine – is expected to amount to 1 130.5  million litres, calculated at an average recovery of 774 litres per ton of grapes. 2013/14 Growing season – A very good cold and wet winter filled water supplies to capacity, ensuring even bud burst. Initial vineyard growth was slow due to late cold fronts in August, followed by cool, wet weather at the beginning of the growing season. This led to a high incidence of disease, and rainfall mid-November further hampered effective disease control by creating challenging spraying conditions and limiting access to vineyards. As a result, downy mildew resulted in crop losses early on in the season in some areas. The climate was favourable for flowering thereafter, and good berry set was obtained. However, after the high rainfall mid-November, vigorous growth ensued, requiring extra input to ensure high grape quality and disease prevention via good canopy aeration and sunlight exposure. Widespread rainfall at the beginning of January – more than 150 mm in the course of four days in the Breede River Valley – increased pressure due to disease and rot even further, while the coastal regions weren’t affected as severely by the rain. Ideal dry, moderate conditions reigned during ripening in January and mid-February, after which a warm period accelerated ripening and resulted in great pressure on intakes in some areas. Cooler weather in March enhanced colour formation and flavour retention in later red cultivars. Regular rainfall at the end of March delayed ripening again and extended the harvest to mid-April. Wine potential – Producers, viticulturists and winemakers look forward to a promising harvest with regard to quality. Moderate climate conditions during the harvest season contributed to intense colour, exceptional flavour and good structure in the red cultivars. White wines are expected to be particularly fruity and tropical, with fresh characteristics. Breedekloof – An ideal year with exceptional quality and size; good colour in the red wines. Klein Karoo – A good, but smaller harvest than the record harvest in 2013, with outstanding Shiraz, Chardonnay and Merlot. Malmesbury – Higher yield of remarkable quality due to good soil moisture conditions in this mainly dryland area. Olifants River – A somewhat smaller harvest due to rot challenges, but with promising white and red wine quality. Orange River – Great frost damage resulted in a substantially lower yield; Colombar, Chenin Blanc and muscadel wines show good potential. Paarl – An exceptional year, with much higher yields – especially in dryland areas – and the promise of very high quality wines. Robertson – A late and challenging year, with good quality and average production. Stellenbosch – One of the wettest seasons in years has coincided with an outstanding harvest with regard to crop size and quality. 2010 saw extremely high quality viticulture in many parts of the world, with an exceptionally long and hot summer providing huge benefits for wineries across many countries, especially in the southern hemisphere. The northern hemisphere and Europe saw something of a cooler summer and flowering period, but this was by no means as disastrous as it could have been. France, especially, had a fantastic year in 2010, with the world renowned Burgundy region proclaiming that their white wines of this year are ones to look out for, and despite yields being relatively small across much of the country, the quality was exceptionally high. Spain, too, received some cooler weather, but Rioja and the rest of central Spain are hailing 2010 as a very good year indeed, again as a result of smaller, finer yields. California also received similar climatic conditions, but again, wineries are highly positive about the overall effect this had on their produce, as the slightly challenging conditions resulted in smaller yields of much elegance and distinction. 2010 was really Australia's year, and in South Australia and across the Mornington Peninsula, Chardonnay vines produced good yields with a lower sugar level than in previous years. As such, the majority of South Australian white wines from 2010 are superb, and packed full of character. Shiraz also had a great year, and most Australian wineries have been proclaiming 2010 one of the great vintages. Both the Argentinian and Chilean wine industries benefited from some ideal climatic conditions this year, and are reportedly ecstatically pleased with the fact that their 2010 wines ended up with lower alcohol levels, and were beautifully balanced wines packed full of flavor.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

There are few wine regions in the world with a reputation as glowing and well established as that of the Bordeaux, in France. Situated mainly around the Dordogne and Gironde rivers, Bordeaux makes the most of its humid climate and rich, clay and gravel based soils to grow some of the finest examples of red and white grape varietals on earth. Wineries in this region have been in operation for hundreds of years, and have carefully developed the expertise required for the production of carefully balanced and utterly delicious blended red and white wines, alongside some exceptional single variety bottles. Many of the chateaux found in Bordeaux have become household names, due to their prestige and the excellence of their products, grown with love and dedication by heritage wineries in this beautiful and special region.

French winemakers are subjected to several laws and regulations regarding the wines they produce, and how they can be labeled and sold. Such procedures are designed to increase the overall quality of the country's produce, and also to ensure that wines made in each particular region or appellation are of a character and type which is representative of the area. Thankfully for consumers of wine world-wide, the French have a particularly high reputation to uphold, and seem to do so flawlessly. Every year, wineries from all over France produce millions upon millions of bottles of fine wine, making the most of their native grape varieties and the excellent terrain which covers most of the country. From the expensive and exquisite red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, to the white wines and cremants of central France, the French are dedicated to providing the world with wines of the highest quality and most distinctive character.

Margaux is an important appellation in the Haut-Medoc district of Bordeaux, south-western France. Located 15 miles (24km) north of the city of Bordeaux, the village of Margaux has a number of prestigious chateaux clustered around it. These include Chateau Margaux, famous for producing first growth red wine that is supple and fragrant. 

The Margaux appellation is, geographically speaking, the largest in the Medoc. It covers the communes (parishes) of Margaux, Cantenac,Soussans, Arsac and Labarde, with specific plots of land permitted and prohibited within each of these. The appellation rules stipulate where, when and how wines must be made in order to earn the AOC Margaux title.

Land divisions are of vital importance in the Medoc, because of the value of the grapes that grow here. The location of a parish boundary or a small stream can make the difference for a winery between relative anonymity and long-lived global fame. In Saint-Julien, Saint-Estephe and Pauillac, the vineyards belonging to each chateau are clearly divided and consolidated in a single zone. In Margaux, this is not the case. Here, even vineyards belonging to the wealthier chateaux are dispersed and mixed in with those of their rivals. The result is that the effects of unique terroir are a little more widely distributed in Margaux – and thus diluted. Producers here create individuality through their own winemaking practices and choice of grape varieties, rather than relying on the qualities created by terroir.

Margaux is famous for producing well-rounded, gently perfumed wines, predominantly from Cabernet-Sauvignon. Their distinctive flavors and profile are often attributed to the local soils. In Margaux, the soils have a high gravel content (Pauillac and Saint-Estephe have slightly more clay), which leads to excellent drainage and a low level of nutrients. Vines grow well in poor, loose, free-draining soil; the poorer the soil, the deeper the vines must go to find water and nourishment. This makes them physically stronger and also allows them to reflect the specific characteristics of the deeper soils. The downside is that Margaux's wines can seem almost too light and delicate in cool vintages.

The grapes permitted for use here are Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot,Carmenere, Petit Verdot and Malbec. They must come from vineyards planted to densities of 6500 to 10,000 plants per hectare (2631 and 4048 per acre), with specified vine-management techniques.

Château Gaudin pauillac 2010

ll the characteristics of classic Pauillac, currants, lead pencil, some gravel, an enticingly tannic bite, elegance allied with power. 40 year old vines on average and only a touch of new oak so wood doesn't dominate the classic flavors found in this truly compelling, value-priced Bordeaux. In short, it's a wine that you would not quibble paying double for if it came from a 'name' Pauillac chateau.

Chateau Andron-Blanquet, Saint-Estephe 2010

Primeur sample at the Vintex tasting. This consistent Saint Estèphe Cru Bourgeois is slightly smudged on the nose but develops some attractive floral, violet notes with time: ripe and almost exotic. The palate is full-bodied with ripe, dense tannins, good acidity, nicely composure towards the delineated finish. Everything in its right place, once that nose clears up this will be a very commendable 2010 for mid-term aging. Tasted April 2011. Neal Martin erobertparker.com

Chateau Grand Ormeau, Lalande-de-Pomerol 2010

La vigne est travaillée de façon traditionnelle (rendement moyen de 45hl/ha) et la vendange faite à la main. La vinification est conduite dans des cuves inox thermorégulées. L’élevage, de 13 mois en moyenne, s’effectue en barriques (dont un tiers neuves).

Le vin est de couleur intense. Le nez est puissant, marqué le plus souvent par les fruits noirs avec des notes qui peuvent être minérales, épicées ou légèrement boisées, montrant une agréable complexité. En bouche, on retrouve puissance et densité, avec une solide structure tannique, et en général une bonne longueur en bouche. Une garde de plusieurs années s’impose avec décantage lorsque le vin a moins d’une dizaine d’années. De qualité régulière, il se place souvent parmi les meilleurs crus de l’appellation.

La production annuelle est de 40 à 50 000 bouteilles. Il est principalement commercialisé en vente direct.

Voorjaarsproeverij Verbunt Wijnkopers

Alsof de hemel z’n zegen heeft gegeven. Een prachtige, stralende lentedag. Pedro Leite van Graham’s Port vertelt dat het op dit moment in Porto alleen maar regent, hij is blij in Nederland te zijn. Niet zomaar ergens, maar in de lommerrijke omgeving van Nijkerk waar op de Putterstraatweg de prachtige gerenoveerde panden van Huis de Salentein staan. Bij de entree staat een glaasje porttonic klaar en dat valt duidelijk in goede aarde. Aan het begin van de zaal staat strategisch opgesteld één van de paradepaardjes van Verbunt, champagne Pol Roger.

Dit is niet zomaar een huis, maar volgens de experts één van de beste die er is. Export directeur Hugues Romagnan laat zijn aanbod proeven. ‘De Brut Reserve is ons meest verkochte en meest gemaakte product. Deze moet ieder jaar constant zijn en dat is niet altijd even makkelijk. De wijn heeft 45 maanden gerust’. Volgens Romagnan is dat de langste tijd voor een Brut. Na de demi-sec, met 33 gram suiker rijkelijk bedeeld, volgt Millesimé 2002 en de rosé Millesimé 2006. Twee lang gelagerde mineralige krachtpatsers, eetchampagnes van het eerste uur. Als toef op de taart schenkt Romagnan de Sir Winston Churchill 2000 in. Ruim tien jaar gelagerd, overwegend pinot noir, volgens Romagnon gaat deze wijn lang mee. Dit is een meditatiechampagne met tonen van toast, tropisch fruit, hout en mineraliteit. Iedere nip geeft weer een andere impressie. Een wijn voor speciale gelegenheden.

Graham’s

Sales-director Jurgen Honing begeleidt me naar de tasting zaal van de Graham’s Port proeverij. Pedro Leite wacht hier het gezelschap op. Hij weet in korte tijd het portlandschap duidelijk te maken. ‘De Britten hebben alle ingewikkelde portvoorschriften gemaakt, maar het zijn Portugezen die het moeten uitvoeren. En die houden niet van regels met als gevolg dat er nogal wat uitzonderingen op de regels zijn’. Als voorbeeld geeft hij de Reserve aan die zowel in ruby als tawny voorkomt, maar niet altijd als zodanig is te herkennen. Het belangrijkste verschil bestaat tussen ruby – lagering in enorme houten vaten tot wel 80.000 liter – en tawny, rijpen in pipes van 500 liter. Binnen deze twee categorieën heb je dan subcategorieën. Binnen ruby de reserve – jonger dan de reserve bij tawny -, de LBV, Crusted en Vintage. Bij tawny bestaat er ook een reserve – vaak ouder dan die van ruby – de tawny met leeftijdsaanduiding 10/20/30 of 40 jaar oud en Colheita, een tawny van één oogstjaar.

We proeven vier tawny’s van Graham ‘they are all meant to drink young, these bottles are therefore made to put up right’. ‘The Tawny’ met een gemiddelde leeftijd van acht jaar en de 10, 20 en 30 jaar oude tawny. Tussendoor vertelt Leite dat Nederland de tweede belangrijkste markt in Europa is na Frankrijk, maar daar drinken ze vooral goedkope port. In Nederland worden jaarlijks 17 miljoen flessen Port gedronken. Dat is veel als je nagaat dat de gemiddelde consumptie 22 liter wijn is en één glas champagne per jaar. Vandaar dat Nederland populair is in Porto. De liefde van de Nederlandse consument voor rosé port is wat teruggelopen, terwijl we verder een land van tawny’s zijn, Engeland blijkt meer van ruby te houden. En de VS drinkt het liefste jonge Vintage Port ‘they like it young’. De vier tawny’s hebben een oplopende graad van complexiteit. De 10 jaar oude heeft meer fruit en de dertig jaar oude tawnymeer tonen van noot en caramel. We sluiten af met twee ruby’s: een LBV uit 2008 en een Vintage uit 2001. Grofweg gesteld zijn deze fruitiger maar ook scherper dan tawny’s. Tot slot een Colheita uit 1969. Graham’s heeft maar 4 Colheita’s gemaakt in zijn geschiedenis en deze staat fier overend. Een fruitmandje met verdieping en volgens Leite perfect geschikt voor een sigaar erbij. Het was een leerzame proeverij.

Restaurant Salentein

Ondertussen is in Restaurant Salentein een prachtig buffet opgesteld wat de rest van de middag open zal blijven. Bijna iedereen zit op het terras, het mooie weer houdt aan. Binnen gaat het proeven natuurlijk gewoon door. Ter ere van het 170 jarig bestaan steunt Verbunt actief het Gijsje Eigenwijsje fonds om kinderen met een ongeneeslijke spierziekte verlichting te bieden. Een speciale tafel staat hiervoor in de proefzaal. De 15 pareltjes van Salentein ontbreken natuurlijk ook niet. Verbunt voert een eigen importbeleid, maar de band met Salentein is natuurlijk evident. En terecht, want deze wijnen mogen er wezen. De single vineyard pinot noir is een omrijwijn, dat zo’n mooie pinot noir uit Alto Valle de Uco kan komen. De malbecs en merlots doen er niet voor onder. De instaprange van Portillo biedt een betaalbaar alternatief. Vina Montes Laurent Miquel, Cave de Ribeauville en Chateau Sainte Rosaline. Het ene moois na het andere. 170 jaar lang sterk in het veld. Proficiat!

Pol Roger Champagne pursang

De afgelopen dagen verbleven wij in Reims in een prachtig hotel gelegen midden in het hart van de stad. Met een luxe touringcar werden wij van het hotel naar Epernay (De Champagne stad) gebracht. Hier bezochten wij Pol Roger.

Met de ontvangst (natuurlijk met een heerlijk glas Pol Roger Brut reserve) stond er een fantastisch lunchbuffet op ons te wachten. In de ruimte waar tijdens de oogst de verse aanvoer plaatsvindt mochten wij "aanvallen" op het buffet. Natuurlijk ontbrak het niet aan voldoende "sap".

Na de lunch kregen wij een "private tour", Pol Roger is namelijk niet open voor bezoekers, maar ontvangt alleen via hun netwerk van importeurs en distributeurs.

Pol Roger is al decennia de hofleverancier van het Britse hof. De Topcuvee van Pol Roger is vernoemt naar Sir Winston Churchill die een groot fan van de wijnen van dit huis was.

Pol Roger is nog een echt ambachtelijk familie bedrijf. Nagenoeg alle handelingen worden handmatig uitgevoerd. Waaronder het draaien van de flessen om het depot langzaam naar de hals te laten glijden. Bij vele andere bedrijven wordt dit met grote robots gedaan.

Na het bezoek aan de ruimte waarin de wijnen worden gereed gemaakt om op fles te gaan daalden wij via een imposante trap (foto van beneden genomen) af naar de diepste kelders in deze streek.

Wist u dat Pol Roger haar "instap" Reserve Brut maar liefst 45 maanden in de kelder laat rijpen? Voor de blend van iedere oogst wordt voor 20-25% wijn toegevoegd uit andere jaren. De huidige reserve bevat dan ook een deel 2006 en 2002.

Magnums en double magnum's oogst 2010 en 2011, nog even geduld deze zijn pas op zijn vroegst in 2015 gereed om te drinken.

Ruim 300.000 fles in dit gedeelte liggen "op de lat" om vervolgens naar de pupitre te worden gebracht om het depot naar de flessen hals te laten glijden.

Onderweg kwamen wij bij een zelfs voor ons afgesloten ruimte. Navraag leerde ons dat hier de topcuvee genaamd Sir Winston Churchill wordt bewaard tot deze klaar is om verkocht te gaan worden.

Na deze tour bezochten wij enkele wijngaarden. Daar het nog erg vroeg in het seizoen is waren hier alleen wat kale druivenranken te zien. Opvallend is dat deze ranken allemaal zeer dicht bij de grond gehouden worden. Dit om optimaal gebruik te maken van de warmte die de aarde in de nacht weer teruggeeft aan de atmosfeer.

Vervolgens reden wij naar het Chateau van de familie Pol Roger. Hier kregen wij een "masterclass" met alle, op dit moment, in de verkoop zijnde #Champagnes.

De champagne wijnen van Pol Roger kenmerken zich allemaal door hun enorme frisheid, mineraliteit en zuiverheid. Een enorm stuk vakmanschap.

De dag werd afgesloten door een 4 gangen diner. Alle gangen en natuurlijk het aperitief werden begeleid door een Champagne van Pol Roger. 

Nooit eerder mocht ik champagnes drinken van zulke grote schoonheid. Tot wel 24 jaar oud, hierdoor iets belegener met mooie tonen van amandel en een lichte ziltigheid. In combinatie met het gerecht een hemelse verwennerij.

Nice, tight aromas of dark fruit, herbs and graphite. The palate starts with peppery red fruit; it has good drive and lengthens well, with freshness present. The finish is complete and very southern Rhône, and controls the force of the vintage well.

Aromatic herbs and medicinal notes with black, spicy fruits and liquorice hints. The ripe palate is centred on mature Grenache, with a fat plum core to it. Nice rich flavours, meaty and complex. Generous and powerful. Needs food; definitely a winter warmer.
