Bodegas Salentein is 2019's Best Oversea Winery

On tuesday the 27th of February the results of the 2018 edition of Mundus Vini were released. With great pride we would like to inform you that the Pyros Barrel Selected Syrah 2015 was awarded "Grand Gold" and "Best of Show Argentina".

Nearly 270 international wine experts from 44 countries spent six days critically judging almost 6,770 wines from more than 150 wine growing regions all over the world. Only 33 wines were awarded Grand Gold of which 3 from the New World and only one from Argentina: Pyros Barrel Selected Syrah 2015.

About Pyros Barrel Selected Syrah:

It represents the living expression of the Valley with outstanding fruit, floral and spiced profiles that result in elegant and unusual wines of great character and personality. The Pyros Barrel Selected Syrah is deep purple with a full body and structure. Silky in the mouth, this Syrah is beautifully balanced and wild like its birthplace.

Salentein scores at Tim Atkins tasting

Tim Atkin

This is my third report on Argentina’s vibrant wine industry and it's the longest and most comprehensive overview of the country I've published to date, running to more than 90 pages. I’ve never been afraid to speak my mind and this report is no exception. It’s an informed, in-depth overview based on more than 20 years of visits to Argentina, including a two-week trip at the end of 2014, and a lot of tastings. There are exciting new discoveries, as well some internationally famous wines reviewed here. And, for the first time, I have published a classification of Argentina's top 120 wineries.

A personal selection of Argentina’s best wines

Scores & Tasting Notes

94 Points - 2012 Salentein Single Vineyard Chardonnay, Plot No. 2 - 13.5% Uco Valley

Salentein’s grapes come from one of its highest Uco Valley vineyards, located at 1,600 metres in San Pablo.
The wine goes through malolactic fermentation but doesn’t seem fat in the slightest, thanks to the freshness
and bite of its cool site. Smoky, mealy and very elegant with a tangy finish. Drink: 2015-19

94 Points - 2011 Salentein Gran Vu - 15% Uco Valley

This was only Pepe Galante’s second vintage at Salentein, but his experience and talent were
already apparent in this blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Densely coloured and still
youthful, with flavours of dried herbs, cassis and blackberry, a hint of graphite, sweet oak
and the concentration to age. Drink: 2015-22

94 Points - 2012 Salentein Numina

Cabernet Franc-  14.5% Uco Valley

This was very good in 2011, but is even better in 2012. It’s the perfume that strikes you first -
grassy, scented and very alluring - but the palate is lovely, too: elegant, refined, deftly oaked
and silky. Yet more evidence that Cabernet Franc can be a very special variety in the Uco
Valley. Drink: 2015-20

94 Points - 2012 Salentein Numina Gran Corte -

14.5% Uco Valley

Salentein’s top red blend combines Malbec with lesser amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon,
Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot and is very impressive indeed, showing polished
tannins, power, pepper, subtle oak, chalky acidity and a long, tapering finish. A wine to watch. Drink: 2015-22

94 Points - 2011 Salentein Single Vineyard Malbec,

Plot No. 21 - 14.5% Uco Valley

This ungrafted Malbec was planted at 1300 metres in 1997 on some of the poorest soils on the
estate. It’s yet another beautifully framed red from Pepe Galante with stylish oak, a sturdy
backbone of tannin, some Mediterranean spices and a fresh, chalky bite. Drink: 2015-20

94 Points - 2013 Salentein Single Vineyard Pinot Noir, Plot No. 1 - 13.5% Uco Valley

Made with an Italian Pinot Noir clone planted in San Pablo at 1,400 metres, this is a lightly
oaked, partial whole bunch fermented red with sweet red cherry and raspberry fruit, bright,
chalky acidity and a long finish. Very promising. Drink: 2015-19

93 Points - 2012 Salentein Primus

Cabernet Sauvignon 14.5% Uco Valley

The first vintage of Cabernet under the Primus label, this is made from clones 337 and 169
As such, it’s one of only a handful of top examples in Argentina. Stylish, firm and structured with an enticing balance between fruit purity, tannins and acidity. A label to watch.

Drink: 2015-20

93 Points - 2011 Salentein Primus Malbec 14% Uco Valley

Primus comes from three small plots located between 1,100 and 1,300 metres. The result is mineral, spicy and focused, showing its cool climate origins. The oak is more pronounced herewith some mocha notes, but there’s plenty of structure and fruit weight, too. Drink: 2015-20

93 Points - 2012 Salentein Primus

Chardonnay 14% Uco Valley

Primus is priced above the Plot 2 Chardonnay, but is not necessarily better in 2012, just richer. This is another very stylish
bottling from a winery that is gaining in reputation. Complex, mealy and toasty with bright minerality and some texture from partial malolactic fermentation. Drink: 2015-19

93 Points - 2012 Salentein Numina Syrah 14.5% Uco Valley

A comparatively rare example of a top notch Syrah in Argentina, this is made from a single clone planted in 1996. Spicy, peppery and polished, like most ofthe
Salentein wines, it’s closer to the Rhône than the Barossa Valley in style.Smoky, spicy and impressively complex. Drink: 2015-20

92 Points - 2012 Salentein Primus Pinot Noir 13.5% Uco Valley

This comes from a slightly lower vineyard than the Plot 1 and is made from a mixture of Burgundian clones. It’s a little
firmer and drier than the single vineyard releases, showing a little more oak as well, but is another classy Pinot.
Drink: 2015-18

Portillo, the first Argentine wine to certify its carbon footprint in all its varietals

News
Portillo, the first Argentine wine to certify its carbon footprint in all its varietals
The winery reinforces its commitment to the environment, with its varietal Malbec the first to get it.

Buenos Aires, June 2014 -. Salentein Uco Valley pioneer, announced that from July 2014 Portillo adds to the certification of carbon footprint of Portillo Malbec the entire line of wines (Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Tempranillo, Malbec Rosé, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc). As part of World Environment Day, Portillo reinforces its commitment to be the first wine certifying the carbon footprint for all varietals, being Malbec the pioneer in Argentina.

Certification is obtained to meet international standards throughout the production process, from the grape to the consumer and each of their presentations. "Carbon Footprint is an environmental management tool that translates impacts and emissions from different processes on amount of CO2 (carbon dioxide) to know, first, the contribution of the organization to climate change and secondly, to design a program of improvements based on good environmental practices to reduce or offset emissions of greenhouse gases, calculated as the amount of CO2 equivalent," said Andrew Arena COO Salentein and Chairman of the Committee on the Environment of Argentina Bodegas, an institution that brings together most of the wineries.

The survey and evaluation were carried out with the company EY (Ernst & Young) and certification is issued by the "Carbon Trust Certification" in the UK. The calculation and certification was performed according to PAS 2050:2008 international standards and code of Good Practice for Code Green house Gas Emissions and Reduction Claims.

"We are very proud to have achieved the high standards that implies Carbon Trust certification. This reinforces the commitment of the winery in relation to environmental care and confirms internal policy to promote sustainability," said Matias Bauza Moreno, Senior Brand & PR Manager Salentein.

Lijkt me leuk voor later.

Proeverij deel 1

Wij proefden achtereenvolgens:

  12. Max Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2013; herkenbaar Cab Sauv, heel elegant. 87% Cab sauv, 8% Petit Verdot en 5% Cabernet Franc.
  13. The Blend Collection Red 2013: Syrah, Carmenere, Cabernet Franc, Roussanne. Een dijk van een wijn.
  14. Kai 2012; 100% carmenere, 22 maanden houtrijping op 100% franse barriques. Veel spanning en kracht in de wijn. Groot bewaar potentieel.
