Ogier Caves des Papes (1)

In juni bezocht ik samen met een groep enthousiaste @Wijnkring ondernemers het wijnhuis @Ogier Caves des Papes in +CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE  In dit verslag alles over het topdomein Clos de L'Oretoire des Papes.

De ondernemers die mee reisden naar dit prachtige wijnhuis hadden in het voorjaar van 2016 een actiepakket gekocht bij +Verbunt Wijnkopers. Na loting werd de groep vastgesteld.

Ogier stamt uit 1859 en is destijds gesticht door een Deen genaamd Ogier. Deze krijger had gevochten in het Baskenland en reisde op de terugweg naar Denemarken door het centraal massief. Denemarken heeft hij nooit meer bezocht. De Rhone streek werd zijn nieuwe stek.

Even buiten het plaatsje Chateauneuf du Pape is Clos de L'Oretoire des Papes gelegen.

Typisch Rhone terroir, 

Uitzicht op de "kale" berg Mont Ventoux. Op de voorgrond is een heringericht stuk natuur wat als waterreservoir voor de omgeving wordt gebruikt. Vele inheemse insecten en vogels zijn er weer terug. Voor de wijngaarden is dit van groot belang, er zijn nu minder tot geen bestrijdingsmiddelen meer nodig.

Op de achtergrond het net gerenoveerde Clos L'Oretoire. Wij waren er de dag voor de officiele opening. Door alle bouwmaterialen konden we helaas (nog) geen goede foto's van de buitenzijde maken.

Clos de L'Oretoire des Papes

Leunend tegen een van zijn percelen, is een klein oratorium gewijd aan Sint Marc daterend uit de achttiende eeuw. Hij waakt over de wijngaarden en is de oorsprong van de legendarische naam Clos de L'Oretoire des Papes . In 1880, verwierf Edouard Amouroux een wijngaard met een bijzondere tentoonstelling in de stad Châteauneuf - du - Pape .De legende was geboren ... en sinds 1926 , wordt de fles nog steeds voorzien van hetzelfde label gecreëerd door Amouroux familie . Le Clos des Papes Retorica is van een wijngaard van 25 hectare, een perfecte balans tussen de grote 4 terroirs van Châteauneuf du Pape.

Een bezoek aan de wijngaarden kan natuurlijk niet zonder proeven. Van Clos de L'Oretoire proefden wij:

Heerlijk frisse mineraal witte wijn.

Tonen van rijpe witte perzik. Zeer fraai en jong drinkbaar!

Jong in het glas, veel primair fruit, helder licht rode kleur.
prachtige begeleider van lamsvlees. Nieuwe stijl!

Vervolgens proefden wij de vier grote terroirs uit de regio om de expressie van ieder afzonderlijke terroir te herkennen. Chateauneuf due Pape is altijd een blend van deze terroirs.

Het volgende verslag zal stil staan bij de wijnen van Ogier en de diverse appellaties uit de Rhone.

Binnen mochten wij alvast van een sneak preview genieten. Wij kregen de nieuwe wijnkelder te zien met al haar verschillende opties om wijn te fermenteren. Van de klassieke houten vaten tot aan de meest moderne methoden worden getest op Clos L'Oretoire om zo de wijnen ook jong drinkbaar te maken. Bij Ogier willen ze de komende jaren zich meer en meer gaan richten op het "jong" drinken van hun Chateauneuf Du pape.

Dirk Coetzee of L’Avenir

Dirk was born in 1985 in George where he grew up on a farm. His father loved wine and there was always wine at home so he was no stranger to the grape.
He matriculated with distinction at Outeniqua High School and graduated at Stellenbosch University in the top 15 per cent, facts which he does not reveal, proof of his natural modesty.

Glowing accolades from the places he worked at in Australia, such as Zilzie Wines and Benziger in Sonoma, USA, show that L’Avenir was lucky to snap him up when they did. Of winemaking he says, “I love holding something that I have made in my hands.”
In his spare time he enjoys surfing, jogging, cycling and golf, and aspires to take part in the Ironman Triathlon. His hobby is woodwork, “I want to make tables for all my friends so they will think of me every time they sit down to eat.” He also likes to cook traditional Sunday roasts, as well as meat dishes and pasta.
Dirk lives on the estate but travels often for L’Avenir to Europe and Russia. Last year he spent two-and-a-half weeks touring the wine estates of Europe with his fiancée. But he says, “My favourite place to holiday is the Wilderness, near where I grew up.” In short, he’s an amiable sportsman who can cook, and just happens to be an award-winning winemaker – a perfect combination.

The L'Avenir estate in Stellenbosch is positioned to take advantage of the spectacular views that abound there. It’s also home to a restaurant serving bistro-style food, and a guest house with all the mod cons.

The estate belongs to French group Advini, that has vineyards in France, South Africa and Chile, but the terroir is quintessentially as South African as are the wines produced here.
L’Avenir is known for its wonderful Chenins and superb Pinotage. The beautiful Pinotage Deck at the highest point on the farm is just the place to do a tasting. Winemaker Dirk Coetzee has been there since 2009 and is making fabulous wines that continue the legacy of L’Avenir.
“I always want to surf in the deepest waters, and jump off the highest mountain,” he says, which ties in with his philosophy of pushing boundaries. However he does this without disturbing the traditional methods that form the basis of his wine philosophy and he easily combines French and South African sensibilities.
Dirk is intensely focused but has an easy-going nature, which masks that intensity to the casual observer. His extensive winemaking experience in Australia and the US, has provided a great foundation from which he will continue to grow. L’Avenir means ‘the future’ in French, which seems quite prophetic in a way.

A young winemaker proving his mettle, I know we will be hearing  more from him in the future.  He answered some questions for us which reveal a whole lot more of how he feels about things—really.
Can you describe the best glass of wine you’ve ever had the pleasure of drinking?
I personally believe that it’s not always about the best wine you drink, but about the best wine experience you’ve had. These types of experiences are influenced by many factors: the food, the atmosphere and the company when having this special wine. If I may highlight a specific moment in my life where I had a great wine experience, I’ll say having exquisite snails paired with 2006 Riesling from the Alsace region in St Emilion at the Lard et Bouchon Restaurant with my fiancée. I can’t even remember the name of the wine, I can just remember that it was magic.

And the worst?
Having good wine out of a bad quality glass is the worst wine you can ever drink. Even worse than that is when you are served wine that’s been sitting next to a machine of some sort that’s exerting heat, and then being served ‘warm’ wine in a bad quality glass! Yes, I’m a wine glass snob. Once you become a winemaker I believe your level of criticism towards bad wine decreases, but still your comments should be direct, fair and open-minded.

What makes South African wines special? Can you describe it?
Our diversity within our ancient soils makes South African wines unique. You can compare the diversity of our wines with the diversity of our country’s people. I believe that South African wines are, most of the time, a good combination of old world vs. new world wines. You’ll find the elegance and the finesse of the old world, but also a little bit of the robustness of the new world in our wines. I would attribute that to the sun, the one thing South Africans cannot go without. Price vs Quality will always be a mind blowing factor of South African wines.

What do you find attracts you to people—as friends?
I’m an easy going person when socialising, thus I feel that people can be at ease and be themselves around me. Whenever I meet new people, I immediately ‘click’ with them if they appear to be a ‘lekker mens’, have a good sense of humor and obviously if they can join me for a fine glass of wine.

What do you like most about yourself?
I enjoy my impulsive behavior and the fact that I’m not really judgmental.

And dislike?
I dislike the fact that I always see my job as a passion and not a job. Reasons are that I’ll spend hours working and sometimes neglect spending time with people close to me.

When in your life have you been happiest—till now?
I’m always trying to be happy and enjoy the stage of life that I find myself in. I have to admit that my happy place is where I grew up, “Wilderness”. Being 15 years old and totally careless and free of life’s demands was great.

What can you just not do without in your life?
Spiritually the Lord and obviously my family, but the two earthly things that I can’t go without are the ocean and bread.

When do you think it is right to tell a teensie weeny lie?
When you want to spare someone’s feelings.

When have you been most bored?
Whenever I have to spend too much time indoors I get very bored.

And excited?
I get excited when I can take my dog to the beach. I surf and he runs. It makes us feel free!

Topscores van Errazuriz, Chili

Vandaag publiceren wij een aantal prachtige scores van het wijnhuis +Viña Errazuriz uit Chili.

Als eerste Chileense wijnhuis ooit mocht de +Viñedo Chadwick 2014 een ultieme score halen van 100 punten +James Suckling, eerder al dit jaar het @Errazuriz uitgeroepen tot de nr. 7 in de lijst van Most Admired Wineries.

 

 

Om de constantheid van @Errazuriz te onderstrepen zijn de scores van de voorgaande jaren natuurlijk ook gepubliceerd. Dit alles is te danken aan de voortreffelijke wijnmaker @Francisco Beattig en zijn team.

Most admired wine brands

Zelden zijn weken zo "groots" als afgelopen week. Drinks International presenteerde de nieuwe lijst met "Most Admired Wine Brands", maarliefst 4 van de door Verbunt Wijnkopers vertegenwoordigde wijnhuizen kregen een super score.

Wijnmaker Randy Ullom van Kendall-Jackson was even in Nederland en dat liet importeur Verbunt niet ongemerkt voorbij gaan. Een rondtocht langs Neerlands wijnjournaille en ambassadeurs|restaurateurs van Jackson Family Wines stond Ullom te wachten. Hij werd daarbij vergezeld door de UK accountmanager Pierre-Marie Pattieu and Verbunts brand manager Marjolein van de Meer. Winebusiness.nl treft Ullom in de bar van het Hampshire Rembrandt Hotel in de Amstelstraat bij het Rembrandtplein. 

De proefflessen en glazen staan al keurig klaar. Ullom ‘I am working for 23 year with Jackson Family Wine, it was and it is a family company’ getooid met een witte snor is een relaxte aardige man met veel kennis. Kendall-Jackson is zelf al met 5.000 hectares al enorm, maar het bedrijf is eigenaar van een groot aantal andere wijnbedrijven in de V.S. en Europa. Het is te veel om hier op te noemen. Het staat uitgebreid op de website: KJ Ullom is alleen verantwoordelijk voor de wijnen van KJ, dat zijn er nogal wat, de andere wineries hebben hun eigen wijnmaker. ‘We grow grapes in different AVA’s like Monterey, Mendocino, Sonoma, Santa Barbara, and each AVA has their own winery’. De druiven zijn van zowel de koelere kuststreken van Californië als hoger gelegen gebieden. Een belangrijke reden van Kendall-Jackson's succes is gelegen in de ligging van de wijngaarden. En uiteraard krijgt iedere variëteit een ‘druifeigen’ behandeling. 

De eerste wijn onder het label Kendall-Jackson was een Chardonnay uit 1982. Deze wijn won 1983 de Platinum Award van de 'American Wine Competition'. Deze barrel fermented chardonnay is enorm zacht en dat spreekt aan. Gestimuleerd door dit succes volgden jaren van investering, verdieping en uitbreiding. Niet voor niets is deze Vinters Reserve de laatste 21 jaar de best verkochte chardonnay in de V.S. Zoals zoveel Amerikaanse wijnbedrijven vormt de export maar een heel kleine gedeelte van de omzet, in het geval van KL 5%. In 1995 werd Kendall- Jackson overigens door het gezaghebbende Wine & Spirits Magazine uitgeroepen tot 'Winery of the Year'. 

De wijnen van KJ hebben een bepaalde opbouw ‘we start with Vintners Reserve, than Grand Reserve, followed by Jackson and the icon series Stature’. Hoe hoger de range, hoe meer de druiven van één district komen. De AVA’s staan uiteraard op het label, maar de Amerikaanse wijnwetgeving is redelijk soepel met het percentage van het district en de druivensoort: beiden 75%. Toch is KJ daarin strak in de leer.

Zoals eerder gesteld, Iedere druivensoort krijgt een ‘customized’ behandeling. Zo krijgt de cabernet sauvignon een lange en koele maceratie ‘we changed our policy towards the CS, with this treatment the tannines become very soft and gentle’. De merlot is een Petrus kloon en krijgt een opvoeding op gebruikte bariques. Barriques waarvan KJ het hout betrekt van de eigen fabriek in Frankrijk. ‘French oak for everything’. Mede daardoor worden alle wijnen gekenmerkt door zachtheid en soepelheid. De cabernet sauvigon is uitmuntend en de chardonnays zijn plaatjes. Ullom heeft de rest van de dag nog tal van afspraken, maar memoreert nog even aan zijn eerdere baas. 

De helaas overleden eigenaar Jess Jackson, verwoordde de ambities namelijk als volgt: 'Our family has been making wine for nearly three decades - and we are still completely fascinated with all that it entails. Watching the grapes mature in the vineyard, experiencing the nonstop activity at harvest time, the rich, earthy smell of the barrel room. And, of course, enjoying the fruits of our labor with family and friends after the final blend is layered together for bottling.' Wat een erfenis heeft deze man nagelaten. Splendid!
